Commentary
And when it was clarified that the reward for those is eternity in the Fire, it was clarified what is for these, as he said, explaining their success: ﴿Their Lord gives them good news﴾ meaning: the One who is gracious to them by guiding them and choosing them. And what a great good news this is, indicating the high status of them; because it is without intermediary, and the fact that the good news is according to the one who gives it indicates that this good news is a great one with no end to it, nor can its measure be encompassed. ﴿By mercy﴾ meaning: great, and its greatness was increased by his saying: ﴿from Him﴾ and that is an indication that there is no salvation without pardon; then he informed that mercy, just as it produced the pardon which is the lowest of ranks, also made happy with its highest, as he said: ﴿And pleasure﴾ meaning: by being pleased with Allah for being content with Allah's decree, and that will be when he limits his gaze to Allah; for He does not change ever by a decree from His decrees just as Allah - who is his Merciful One - does not change. And whoever's gaze is for seeking a share for himself is always in change from joy to sadness and from happiness to grief and from comfort to pain and from pleasure to suffering. Thus, it is established that complete mercy can only be attained by the one who is pleased with Allah's decree, and Allah will be pleased with him, so his soul will be pleasing and accepted. For this reason, he did not restrict it with: 'from Him.' And these two are in this world and the Hereafter.
And when he mentioned this spiritual Paradise that is granted in this world, he followed it with the explanation of the physical spiritual Paradise specific to the abode in which there is permanence, as he said: ﴿And gardens﴾ meaning: many orchards of trees and fruits ﴿for them therein is great bliss﴾ meaning: very great, pure from any impurity, and it indicated eternity by his saying: ﴿perpetual﴾.
