Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the righteous from others, He condemned those who did not distinguish between the two categories, saying: "Did you make the watering of the pilgrims" meaning: merely devoid of faith "and the building of the Sacred Mosque" meaning: likewise, like faith in Allah and the Last Day and jihad. And the people of watering and building without faith in their allegiance and refraining from their enmity are "like those who believe in Allah" meaning: the one who carries the belief in His perfection upon every perfection "and the Last Day" meaning: the one whose fear urges him towards every good "and strives in the way of Allah" meaning: the Sovereign, the Most High, encompassing all things. The verse, according to the reading of the majority, indicates the omission of the first comparison to signify the comparison to it, and secondly the comparison to signify the comparison to it. As for the narration of Nasi ibn Wardan from Abu Ja'far, which is unusual: "the waterers and builders" - in the plural, it does not require estimation.
And when it was as if it was said: We thought that, so what is their state? He said: "They are not equal before Allah" meaning: He who has all perfection, because the polytheists have wronged by abandoning faith. "And Allah" meaning: He who has all authority, and there is no authority for anyone with Him "does not guide the wrongdoing people" meaning: those who place things in other than their proper places, and disbelief is the greatest injustice. So do not ascribe to them guidance nor equality with the guided, even if they perform all the actions of the guided except for faith. And whoever among you does that is wronging himself, and it is feared for him the loss of the cause of guidance.
