Commentary
And when the estimation was made - due to what their reluctance from fighting has guided them to and the inclusion of 'Am' (the guiding word) indicating that its entry is in the middle of the speech - then the beginning for it is the letter 'A' alone: 'And did you think that He, the Exalted, does not know that or is not able to grant you victory?' He based this on his saying as a reprimand for those who hesitated about that with a type of hesitation: 'Or did you think?' meaning: due to a deficiency in reason that he builds the matter therein on other than wisdom. This is what is meant by his saying: 'that you would be left' meaning: remaining on what you are upon without being tested by what the believer is distinguished from the hypocrite by. And when he expressed it with 'And when' it indicated - with the encompassing of the past time - that what follows it is expected to occur. 'Allah knows' meaning: the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection. 'Those who strive among you' meaning: a clear knowledge by which the proof stands against you in the course of your customs according to your reason that jihad occurs in reality by action.
And when the meaning was: strive sincerely, he translated it and elaborated it with his saying: 'And did not' meaning: and when He does not know those who did not 'take' and it is permissible that it be a state. And it indicated the delay of ranks from its place, glorified is He, by his saying: 'besides Allah' meaning: the One who does not deviate from Him and desires other than Him, for whom there is the slightest insight - as indicated by the form of 'if'al' - for He is the One who is unique in perfection. And He emphasized the negation by repeating 'no' saying: 'nor His Messenger' meaning: the one who is the essence of His creation 'nor the believers' meaning: those whom He has chosen from His servants. 'And a confidant' meaning: a close companion whom you secretly confide in and to whom you turn, so your secrets enter into it and its secrets enter into you. For a confidant is everything you have entered into something that is not of it. A man may be among a people and not be of them; a confidant is one who is specifically involved in the secret of his matter without others. It is said: he is my confidant and they are my confidants - for the singular and the plural. Al-Baghawi transmitted this from Abu Ubaidah. Ibn Hisham said: 'a confidant' means a secretive one and its plural is 'waleeja'. He says: they did not take a secretive one besides Him to whom they confide other than what they show, similar to what the hypocrites do. They show faith to those who have believed, and when they are alone with their devils, they say: 'Indeed, we are with you.'
The result is that leaving does not occur without knowledge of the two matters. The intended meaning of the negation of knowledge is the negation of the known. Thus, the meaning is: and when they are not sincere strivers.
And when the apparent meaning of that is a possibility for those whose feet have not firmly settled in knowledge to cling to, He concluded with His saying: 'And Allah' meaning: the One who has complete encompassing knowledge 'is All-Aware of what you do' meaning: whether it is manifested outwardly or not.
