Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' And when the one who commands to follow a path then leaves in it what needs to be clarified, he is only afflicted by ignorance or forgetfulness. Glorified and exalted is He, He negated that from Himself and said, explaining the absence of misguidance: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection ﴿is All-Knowing of everything﴾ [At-Tawbah: 115] meaning He has profound knowledge, so no obscurity can approach Him in any way at any time. He clarifies to you all that you do and leave, and what guidance depends upon. What He leaves, He only leaves it as a mercy for you. ﴿My Lord does not misguide nor forget﴾ [Ta-Ha: 52], so do not seek it. Then He explained His knowledge of everything by saying that His power is comprehensive. He is capable of aiding whom He wills and taking vengeance on whom He wills. So it is not appropriate for anyone to love except in Him, nor to hate except in Him, nor to concern themselves with the enmity of anyone who opposes Him. He said: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning the Greatest King ﴿has﴾ meaning in every regard you consider to be of the attributes of perfection ﴿the dominion of the heavens and the earth﴾. Nothing is hidden from Him, for He is All-Aware of everything that benefits you and harms you, and He is your ally. He clarifies it for you, and whoever has all dominion is in a position where nothing can resist His command: neither knowledge nor anything else, because knowledge is among the greatest powers and abilities. A king can only be one who is knowledgeable and capable. Then He explained His power and knowledge by what is observed repeatedly in His actions in animals, plants, and others. He said: ﴿He gives life and causes death﴾ meaning in every sense, for He is the One who gave you and others the physical life and specifically granted you the life of faith. Just as He made others some of them allies of one another, and gathered them all under the allegiance of their enemy, the devil, He made you (p-35) allies of your Lord, the Most Merciful. He is your ally and supporter. 'And what' meaning while it is the case that 'what is with you' And when it is not for anyone to exceed His rank, glorified is He, He affirmed the exception by saying: ﴿besides Allah﴾ meaning [the King] to whom belongs all command. He emphasized the negation by saying: ﴿no ally﴾ meaning a close one who acts with you in protection and advice as a close one does in support and otherwise. And when it is the case that a person may be aided by someone who is not his relative, He said: ﴿and no supporter﴾ meaning: so do not ally except with those who are of His party and those who love Him and are close to Him. In it is a warning for those who advance towards what they should avoid, especially the conciliators with the enemies of Allah among the secretive and the open. For the ultimate consequence of that is their allegiance, which does not avail against Allah at all.
