115Allah is not such as He makes a people go astray after He has given them guidance, unless He explains to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allah is fully aware of every thing.

Commentary

And when seeking forgiveness for the polytheists was a great matter, and there was in it a type of guardianship for them, He, glorified and exalted is He, made evident to the believers what He had bestowed upon them by not holding them accountable for their engagement in it, to emphasize that and to sever the connection between the heights of faith and the depths of disbelief in every regard. So He, the Most High, said: ﴿And Allah was not﴾ meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection; and when misguidance is the cause of destruction, and whoever establishes a law and then punishes its adherents without clarification is like one who guides to a path that does not lead, and his companion perishes, so the one who guides in that way is misleading. He said: ﴿To mislead a people﴾ meaning: He will do to them what He does to the misguided in terms of punishment for their committing what He has forbidden by a repealer that has abrogated it ﴿after He had guided them﴾ meaning: by a law that He established for them ﴿until He clarifies to them﴾ meaning: a clear explanation for the disease of ignorance ﴿what they should be cautious of﴾ meaning: from what is worthy of them to beware of and avoid, fearing its consequences [by a repealer that abrogates the state of permissibility they were in].
