And when the commands for disavowal from the living polytheists became numerous in this surah, and the command also came for disavowal from the dead hypocrites by prohibiting supplication for them, this verse came indicating disavowal from every polytheist. Thus, the explicit statement followed it regarding what it indicated. This is because when it was established by this verse in the introduction of the neighbor that the pledge was made to specify Paradise for the believers, and that He, the Most High, fulfills what He has promised, it was established that it is not permissible for others to enter Paradise and that others are the companions of the Fire. For it has been known that the Hereafter consists of two abodes: Paradise and Fire. And when all of this was established, it was certainly known from the correct premises that what was meant is that 'what was' in the essence of the matter (p-30) 'for the Prophet' means that he does not speak except with what there is a clarification from Allah regarding it. 'And those who believed' means they acknowledged that they have believed in his call, so they do not do except what they have knowledge of from it. 'To seek forgiveness' means to request forgiveness and to supplicate for it 'for the polytheists' means those firmly rooted in polytheism in the worship of their Lord. 'Even if they were' means the polytheists 'relatives' of those who believed 'after it became clear to them' means by their dying upon polytheism and the revelation of this verse to conclude with the specification of Paradise 'that they are the companions of the Hellfire' means they have no eligibility for Paradise. For indeed, seeking forgiveness means the erasure of sins until its possessor is saved from the Fire and enters Paradise, and it is not appropriate for them to have any regard for them; for that might lead to leniency that detracts from the fighting that the pledge entails. Thus, it is only appropriate to have pure disavowal, hostility, and contention. And the restriction of the prohibition with clarification indicates the permissibility of supplication for the living; for the intention of seeking forgiveness is to turn towards faith which necessitates forgiveness.
