And when it was from the nature of acceptance that the pleasure of Allah is to accept the offering, he ﷺ commanded them for their purification and to please their hearts by saying: "Take." And he had mercy on them by specifying, saying: "From their wealth, a charity," meaning it purifies their souls by giving it. "It purifies them," meaning it is from their sins and it runs for them in the manner of expiation. "And it increases them," meaning you increase them and cause them to grow "with it" by multiplying their good deeds. "And pray," meaning show kindness "to them" and manifest their honor with your supplication for them. Then he explained that by saying: "Indeed, your prayer," meaning the supplications that you send to them, which will connect them to Allah. "Is a source of tranquility for them," meaning it reassures their hearts after the anxiety of fear from the consequences of sin, for they know that acceptance is only from those who have attained His pleasure regarding them. And from [the fact that] Allah has heard your words in response to you and knows your sincerity in their righteousness. "And Allah," meaning the One who encompasses all things, "is All-Hearing, All-Knowing," meaning of all that can be heard and all that can be known from you and from them and from others. He is worthy of response and reward. This is because this group, when their regret intensified over their absence, they tied themselves to the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked about them when he arrived, and it was said: They regretted their absence from you and they swore: No one will release them except you. He said: And I will not release them until I am commanded to do so. Then Allah, glorified and exalted is He, revealed these verses. They said: O Messenger of Allah! These are our wealth that we left behind from you, so give charity from it! He said: I was not commanded to do that. When Allah revealed this verse, he took a third and gave charity from it.
