102And there are others who admitted their sins while they had mixed a good deed with an evil one. It is likely that Allah will relent towards them. Surely, Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.

Commentary

And when he mentioned this rebellious and harsh group, he contrasted it with the gentle and pure group, which is the faction upon which repentance has been completed and the gaze of mercy is directed towards it. He said: ﴿And others﴾ meaning: from among you, from the Bedouins and the people of the city, there are others ﴿who have acknowledged their sins﴾ meaning: they have compelled themselves to mention them as a repentance from them, out of regret, cessation, and determination, and they did not resort to false excuses [and they are the moderate ones].

And when mixing is a gathering in blending, it is understood by merely mentioning it that the mixed one has blended with another. Thus, the use of the conjunction 'and' in 'others' implies that the meaning is: ﴿They mixed good deeds﴾ with evil ones ﴿and another evil﴾ with good ones. This is one of the gentlest witnesses to the type of intertwining, and perhaps the expression in a way that conveys this indicates the equality of the two deeds and that neither of them is more deserving than the other to be the origin. [And the Prophet ﷺ explained this regarding some people he saw in a dream, part of them was good and part of them was bad, as narrated by al-Bukhari in the tafsir from Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him.] Then he made their required repentance contingent upon the acknowledgment of its acceptance by saying: ﴿Perhaps Allah﴾ meaning: by His encompassing attributes of perfection ﴿will turn to them﴾ for indeed ﴿perhaps﴾ from Him, glorified and exalted is He, is obligatory because this is the practice of kings, and perhaps the expression by it indicates - along with the indication that nothing is obligatory upon Him for anyone - that every good He does is merely out of grace, indicating that they have become like others among the pure believers who are not infallible in committing shortcomings and expecting mercy from Allah by returning them to vigilance. Just as those are counted among the party of Allah with this expected pardon for their shortcomings, so too are these; then He justified His action towards them, hoping for more by saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the Possessor of Glory and Honor ﴿is Forgiving and Merciful﴾ meaning: He has always been described as accepting the one who turns away when he turns back and exchanging his evil deeds with good ones, as a favor from Him and an honor; al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih in the tafsir from Samurah ibn Jundub, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: "Two beings came to me tonight and sent me forth until they reached a city built of gold and silver bricks. We were met by men, part of them was as beautiful as you can see, and part of them was as ugly as you can see. They said to them: Go and plunge into that river. So they plunged into it, then they returned to us, and the ugliness had gone from them, and they became in the best form. They said to me: This is the Garden of Eden, and that is your dwelling. They said: As for the people who were part of them good and part of them bad, they mixed good deeds with another evil, and Allah forgave them."
