And when he had completed the four divisions: the two divisions of the settled and the two divisions of the nomads, then he mixed between two of them as an honor for the former and as an encouragement for the latter. He mixed between all of them in another manner, then he mentioned among them groups from those who had fulfilled the judgment with their punishment due to insistence or repentance. And among them are those whose matter has been delayed until the Day of Judgment. He began the divisions with those hidden from His knowledge so that the people of that division may know that He, glorified and exalted is He, is knowledgeable of the hidden matters. Therefore, they remain humbled in fear of what He has threatened them with. He said, clearly stating what had not been previously declared regarding their hypocrisy: "And among those around you" meaning around your city, Al-Madinah, "are the Bedouins" meaning those we have mentioned as being the most disbelieving due to their harshness. "Hypocrites" meaning: firmly rooted in hypocrisy, as if their harshness and obstinacy are the cause of their hypocrisy. And he followed them with those who are more adept in hypocrisy than them. He said: "And among the people of Al-Madinah" meaning hypocrites as well; then he clarified that they do not repent by describing them with his words: "They have persisted" meaning: they have been hardened and continued and have been obstinate and rebellious, and they have become greatly skilled in it and fierce, until all their apparent and hidden limbs have become subdued to it, and it has become a characteristic for them. "In hypocrisy" meaning they have excelled in this description to the extent that they have become fully capable of it; then he clarified their skill in it with his words: "You do not know them" meaning: by their appearances, despite what you have of great insight and truthful perception due to their extreme caution and avoidance of what is ambiguous in their matter; then he threatened them and clarified their loss with his words: "We" meaning specifically "know them"; then he resumed their punishment with his words: "We will punish them" meaning with a promise that will not be broken. "Twice" meaning: one of them is with your safe return and the clarity of your matter and the elevation of your status and the strength of your authority and the appearance of your proof, for they have cut off due to their ignorance and harshness and severity, as I indicated with my words: "And they await for you the turns of fate" [At-Tawbah: 98] - that you will not return this time from this journey due to what they know of your steadfastness against the adversaries, and your boldness against the brave lions, and your daring in the face of horrors, when the field becomes narrow and the valiant lions retreat. And due to the greatness of the Romans and their strength and their dominance and their multitude, and it has escaped the foolish and hidden from the wretched wealthy that Allah, who created them, is greater than them and more powerful, and His soldiers are stronger than their soldiers and more numerous; and the second time after your death is by defeating the people of apostasy and eradicating them and restoring what you established with your caliph, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, to what it was during your days of prominence and the spread of light and guidance and ruling over those who opposed it with woe and destruction. And it will come that it is possible that the second time will be the demolition of the Mosque of Al-Dhirar and the revelation of what they concealed regarding their hidden secrets. "Then they will be returned" meaning: after death "to a great punishment" meaning: no one knows the greatness of its truth except Allah, the Exalted, and it is the everlasting greatest punishment that will never cease.
