Commentary
And when this is a great oath in mentioning those nights, which includes mentioning those feelings and what is in them of gathering and weeping, as Abu Talib said in his famous Lamiyyah poem:
‘And on the night of gathering, while the dwellings are from Mina, And is there anything above it in sanctity and dwellings?’
And in his reminder of resurrection and its indication, there is a clear rational indication of creation after annihilation, along with what these things have in themselves and in the souls of those addressed by them of grandeur. He, glorified and exalted is He, alerted to this by His saying: ﴿Is there in that﴾, meaning what is mentioned along with what it has of high matter and clear worth ﴿an oath﴾, meaning enough and convincing ﴿for the one﴾, meaning the owner of ﴿a mind﴾, meaning it prevents him and stops him from following desires in the pursuit of desires, so it elevates him to the peak of guidance, in the ranks of excellence, until he knows that the one who did what this oath contains does not leave it in vain, and that He is capable of resurrecting the dead. Ibn Jarir said: It is said to a man if he is in control of himself, overpowering it and regulating it: 'Indeed, he is one of sound mind.' [It ends here, so whoever reaches that his mind prevents him from sins and carries him towards virtues, he is of sound mind.]
And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: He, glorified and exalted is He, began with those who were mentioned before a different aspect of consideration, which is that they should remember the state of those who preceded them from the nations and what followed them of their denial and their destruction. So He said: ﴿Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with 'Aad﴾ [Al-Fajr: 6] until His saying: ﴿Iram of the pillars﴾ [Al-Fajr: 7] until His saying: ﴿Indeed, your Lord is surely in ambush﴾ [Al-Fajr: 14], meaning nothing is hidden from Him of the deeds of the creatures, nor is what they conceal absent from Him ﴿It is the same for you whether one of you conceals his speech or declares it﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 10]. So why do these people not take heed by what they see and observe of the creation of camels, the raising of the sky, the setting of the mountains, and the leveling of the earth, all of which is for their interests and benefits? The camels are for their burdens and their transport, the sky is for their watering and shading, the mountains for storing their waters and their provisions, and the earth for their settling and traveling. So by all these matters, they were not enlightened, nor did they take heed from those who passed away from the centuries.
﴿Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with 'Aad﴾ [Al-Fajr: 6] for their great tyranny and their blatant falsehood ﴿Indeed, your Lord is surely in ambush﴾ [Al-Fajr: 14] so they will remember at a time when remembrance will not benefit ﴿When the earth is pounded to dust﴾ [Al-Fajr: 21] ﴿And your Lord comes and the angels in rows﴾ [Al-Fajr: 22] ﴿And Hell is brought forth on that Day﴾ [Al-Fajr: 23] ﴿On that Day, mankind will remember, but how will that remembrance benefit him﴾ [Al-Fajr: 23] - it ends.
