Commentary
And when regret necessitates that a person acts contrary to it, it is clarified that there is no action except for [the manifestation of] regret. So he began his saying: ﴾He says﴿, meaning wishing for the impossible in a manner of renewal and continuity: ﴾Oh, I wish﴿. And does 'wish' benefit anything? ﴾I had presented﴿, meaning I had initiated the presentation of what would benefit me from seriousness and action [with it] ﴾for my life﴿, meaning the days of my life in this world or for the sake of this remaining life for which there is no death after it. And it may be that the reason for his wishing this is his knowledge that he was in the world a chooser, and that the acts of obedience in themselves [were] possible, with no hindrance to him from them in the apparent except that he turned himself away from them and did not attach what Allah had granted him of the abilities to them.
