Commentary
﴿Amilatun﴾ meaning striving in the deeds by which she seeks salvation, where there is no salvation by missing the abode of action. So you see her striving in what the guardians have commanded her, such as dragging chains and shackles, and plunging into the trials of the fires, and the like. It is as if it is said to her: Fulfill the trust, then her trust is represented to her in the depths of Hellfire. So she is tasked with descending to it, then she carries it on her neck and ascends in the mountains of fire, until when she is about to reach the top, it falls from her, and she is tasked with descending to it again, and so on. This is due to what she neglected of action in the world. ﴿Nasibatun﴾ meaning she is in that in the utmost of toil and diligence in work and striving. This is the narration of Al-Awfi from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both. This is because they did not fear Allah in the world, so they did not work for Him, and they did not exert their bodies in His obedience. Thus, they were compelled on that day to something greater than what they rejected in the world, with harm without benefit. It is permissible that it is meant by it those who toiled and exerted their bodies in the world while they were not on the religion of Islam, like the monks of the Christians after the scriptures, and the heretics of the Sufis among the philosophers and their followers.
