Commentary

And when He described Paradise with the first thing that is considered in it, which is the absence of anything that causes discomfort, He followed it with what is desired afterward, which is the enjoyment of pleasures. And since eating has been understood from the mention of the word Paradise, the mention of drinking is for that reason and for its indication, as it is flowing in accordance with the increase of the beauty of Paradise and the abundance of what is in it from the delightful plants and the refreshing fruits of the stars and trees, and the irrigation and birds. He said, because not every Paradise that we know has flowing water in it: "In it" meaning Paradise. And when the flowing water is suitable to be divided into many places, and the limit of His saying is intended to mean the general type that includes much, in contrast to the eye of the people of Hell in the abode of ruin: "A flowing spring" meaning very great in flow, so that it does not cease at all due to the purity and fertility of its land and the abundance and goodness of its water. It is suitable to encompass all its regions, both far and near, even if its expanse is great and its corners and areas are distant, just as we see it flowing from the trunk of a very large tree, watering all its branches, leaves, and fruits. And it increases upon that by the fact that its flow is from below to above, drawing it with the pull of desire and driving it with a drive that is estimated by the Creator, the All-Knowing. And the One who has the power over this, as He is a witness to us, we do not doubt, is capable of making this spring - suitable for the type even if it is singular in person - general for all the facilities of Paradise, flowing to its tents, gardens, orchards, factories, and assemblies, and it rises to the heights of its chambers even if they are high, divided according to the interests, distributed according to the extent of the benefits, with the utmost precision regarding what is within it from the submissiveness that causes them to shed tears and reduces hunger and increases thirst and hunger.
