And when its drying and blackening occurred after its greening and growth, it indicated the completeness of ability and the perfection of choice by punishing the opposites upon the singular essence. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿So He made it﴾, meaning after stages from the time of its emergence, ﴿like chaff﴾, meaning much. Then He ended it, so He dried it and crushed it and tore it apart, and the flood gathered some of it to some of it, making it foam and perishing and worn out and fragments upon the surface of the earth. ﴿dark﴾, meaning in the utmost of moisture until it became black, striking towards greenness, or red striking towards black, or its greenness intensified until it struck towards black. And Al-Qazzaz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his diwan: 'Al-Huwah is a color of horses, and it is between the dark and the reddish-brown.' This became common until they named every black one 'Ahwa.' It is permissible that he means then that it is black due to the intensity of its dryness, as the winds gathered it and collected it from every direction where it is broken apart. Each of the two words has in it life and death, and he delayed the second for their bearing, as its indication of greenness is more complete. If it had been presented, it would not have been directed to anything else. Thus, his gathering between the opposites upon the singular essence indicates the perfection of choice. As for the natures, they have no effect that He, glorified and exalted is He, established in it except the positive, like fire when it touches something, it burns it, and it cannot thereafter change it to another attribute other than that which it affected in it. He indicated by the beginning and the end to remember that, and that it is in the manner of repetition every year, indicating the resurrection of creatures. The pasture was specified because it is more indicative of resurrection as it is what people grow. And when it ends, it shatters and breaks apart and becomes dust. Then He, glorified and exalted is He, returns it with water to what it was, equally, just as He does with the dead, without any difference at all.
