Commentary
And when this stirs the listener to the utmost degree of stirring to say: When will its return be to him? He answers him: ﴿On the Day when the secrets will be tested﴾. He built it for the passive form, indicating with it the ease that it is from the matter that is clear to the utmost clarity that the one who tests it is the one who returns it, and He is Allah, glorified and exalted is He, without needing to mention it. ﴿The secrets﴾ means everything that the breasts conceal of beliefs and intentions, and what the limbs hide from the invalidation of ablution and washing, and so on from all offenses, by mixing the secrets on that day, which is the Day of Resurrection, with tremendous matters that will tilt it and transform it from what it was, so it will return to being manifest after it had been hidden. Thus, its good will be distinguished from its evil, and its owner will be recompensed for it.
