Commentary
And when he mentioned the lofty matter, beginning with it due to its nobility, he followed it with the lowly, so He, the Exalted, said: "And the earth" meaning your dwelling which you are constantly in contact with and touching at all times, "with cracks" meaning that which cracks and splits, from which plants emerge. The beginning and the return are a clear indication of resurrection. Thus, he gathered by this division the lofty world, which is like a man, and the lowly world, which is like a woman. Just as the man waters her with his water and she cracks open [for offspring], so too does the sky water the earth and it cracks open [for plants]. And just as it cracks open [for plants] after its demise and becomes dust, it returns as it was. Likewise, it cracks open [for people] after their demise, and they return as they were by the permission of their Lord without any difference at all.
