Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of his denial of what the messengers brought him regarding the gathering in a way that clarifies the evidence for the invalidity of his denial, and he did not return, He caused him to swear by the truth of that. This is because there is nothing with the sincere and compassionate warner after the establishment of the proofs except to believe in the truth of what he said, considering it for the one advised and out of compassion for him. And leaving the oath on what is apparent is more eloquent than swearing, due to what is in that leaving of a warning to the addressed one to reflect and contemplate. So He said: "So I do not swear," meaning I do not take a great oath, which is like the vastness of the sea, regarding these matters that I will mention, due to their indication of the ability to create and recreate. I do not swear by them, even though they are of the utmost greatness due to their clear indications, because the one whom the oath is taken upon is greater than them and more evident; He is free from needing to swear. "By the twilight," meaning the light that occurs in the west after the setting of the sun, in layers of redness, then yellowness, then a murkiness to whiteness, then blackness. And likewise, the night begins with whiteness with a dustiness, then its dustiness gradually increases until it becomes completely black, enveloping everything in darkness. It is called twilight due to its delicateness, and from it is compassion due to the tenderness of the heart.
