Commentary
And as for the one who is given his record, meaning the record of his account, behind his back, meaning in his left hand, it is given in a way that encompasses all directions of behind, which is the knowledge of evil, because he used to do what Allah did not permit. It is as if he acted from behind it, thinking that it is hidden from Him, glorified and exalted is He. Therefore, it is fitting that his right hand be tied to his neck, and his left be behind his back, and his record be placed in it. This is a connection: mentioning the right first indicates the left secondly, and mentioning the behind secondly indicates the front first. The secret of this is that he mentioned the evidence of affection and kindness in greeting and similar acts in the happy one, and the evidence of betrayal and assassination in the wretched one.
