Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, concluded what He intended from the glorification of that [Day] and the amazement at those who were not benefited by His proofs to allow it and the denial of it, and with what is in it of reprimand being understood for the confirmation, He negated with the tool of deterrence for the exaggeration in the negation the content of what the questioning was about. So He said: ﴿No﴾ meaning let not those think that in any way, due to the density of their natures and their standing with the tangible, like the behavior of animals; rather, they do not allow it. And if they had allowed it, they would not have fallen into the injustice of anyone whom they ask about on that terrifying Day. And what necessitated their falling into crimes was nothing but their turning away from it. And Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It is in the meaning of truly connected to what follows - it has ended. And with that, it is an indication of the deterrence that there is no deterrence after it from believing in such a thing and agreeing with something that necessitates disgrace therein.

And when He informed about their denial, He began to affirm what they denied in the most eloquent and terrifying manner, alarming them about the evils that befall them and the loss of joys, confirming for the sake of their denial. So He said: ﴿Indeed, the record﴾ and He revealed the place of the implicit, generalizing and linking the ruling by description. So He said: ﴿of the wicked﴾ meaning the record of the account of those who were driven to their disbelief by their character, and likewise everyone who agrees with them in their attributes, so he was in the utmost of character that justifies his association and companionship. And He emphasized the confirmation by saying: ﴿is surely in Sijjin﴾ which is a conveyed knowledge in the form of exaggeration about the description of [the] prison, which is confinement, because it is the cause of confinement in Hell. That is, there is no eligibility for them to ascend to the place of the sanctities, indicating that their record, if it is in a great prison, meaning narrow and severe, they are [in] the greatest [of it]. Ibn Jarir said: It is the seventh earth - it has ended [and he understands -] with this reality that they are in the utmost loss, for it is said to everyone who has fallen: he has become dust and has stuck to the earth - and similar to that.
