Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned that they have become accustomed to these vices until they have become a character for them, which they have grown accustomed to and found comfort in, and they have settled into it, this would only be from one who feels secure from punishment and denies accountability. This denial has produced in them the most eloquent means of understanding that their state is worthy of being marveled at and questioned about. And that the one questioning about its occurrence among them has a suspicion, while certainty cannot be imagined in them due to the remoteness of their dry states and their rigid understandings about it. So He, the Most High, said: 'Do those who are the most despicable, distant, filthy, and lowly think that they will have a time among times where they will not be certain of what has passed of the proofs that have provided the highest ranks of certainty?' For if they had thought that, a thought that would have deterred them if they had any insight into themselves regarding such abominations. And whoever those decisive proofs do not benefit in terms of a suspicion that would make them cautious for themselves, then they have no sense at all. 'That they are' and He expressed it in the passive form by saying: 'raised up' as a reference to being overpowered in the easiest manner by the resurrection, which they have become accustomed to, similar to being overpowered by wakefulness after being overpowered by sleep.
