Commentary
And when their claim was merely a saying they uttered with their mouths, which does not exceed it greatly, He repeated their rebuke and their denial of it, saying: ﴿No﴾, meaning the matter is not as they said of legends, neither in reality nor with them. So let them cease from it with the greatest cessation. And when a person's saying is about something he does not believe in, nor is it in reality, as is truly astonishing, it is hardly believable. He explained that what drives them to it is the veil which He, glorified and exalted is He, has placed upon their hearts. He said, affirming to those who deny this among the deceived: ﴿Indeed, they are veiled from their Lord﴾, meaning from the mention of the One who has done good to them, and from His fear and hope. ﴿On that Day﴾, meaning when they said this empty saying. And since the barrier is indeed the veil, His saying: ﴿They will be veiled﴾ was built for the passive form. Therefore, the devils and desires have taken control over them, so they began to say what, if the animals had understood, they would have been ashamed to say. And it is better that the verse is an explanation and reasoning for their wretchedness, which has been previously informed about. The estimation is: on that Day, which is the Day of Judgment, and the intended meaning is the veil from the vision, and this is a glad tidings for the believers regarding it. Al-Baghawi said: Most of the interpreters said: about His vision. And he said: The two Imams, Al-Shafi'i and his teacher Malik, used this verse as evidence for the vision. And the scholar Abu Na'im narrated in Al-Hilya in the biography of Al-Shafi'i that he said: In this verse is evidence that His allies will see Him in His attribute. Ibn Al-Fadl said: Just as He veiled them in this world from His oneness, He veiled them in the Hereafter from His vision. Al-Hasan said: If the ascetics and worshippers knew that they would not see their Lord in the Hereafter, their souls would have departed in this world. Al-Qushayri said: And the evidence of the address necessitates that the believers will see Him as they know Him today. [End of text]. And in it is a representation of their humiliation by the humiliation of one who prevents entry to the king.
