Commentary
And when all these conditions that have been made signs of the Hour necessitate precise knowledge, and each one of them reveals astonishing matters, and all of them indicate the transition from this abode to another abode due to the destruction of this abode, it is appropriate that He responds to 'when' with His saying: ﴿A soul has come to know﴾ meaning all souls with the news of the reckoning and what He, glorified and exalted is He, establishes with the power of composition from a faculty for recollection, as He, the Most High, said: ﴿So We removed your covering﴾ [Q: 22]. The indication of the intention of generality is expressed by the indefinite article in the context of fear and warning, while knowing that all souls are equally in knowledge of this and ignorance of it. So whatever is established for resurrection is established for all. And perhaps He made it indefinite as a hint that whoever Allah has granted intellect should allow for the possibility that he is the intended one and should fear: ﴿What it has brought forward﴾ meaning of deeds ﴿and what it has delayed﴾ meaning all that it has done of good or evil or otherwise, or what it has brought forward before death and what it has delayed of a Sunnah that remains after it.
And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: This Surah is as if it is a completion of Surah al-Takwir due to the unity of the intent, so its connection to it is clear, and a similar one has passed - it has ended.
