Commentary
(p-298) Surah Al-Infitar
Its purpose is to warn against being engrossed in evil deeds, being deceived by the goodness of the Lord and His generosity, and forgetting the Day of Judgment on which one will be held accountable for even the smallest actions. On that day, no soul will avail another soul in anything. Its name, Al-Infitar, is the clearest indication of this. (In the name of Allah) who has majesty as He has beauty. (The Most Gracious) who encompasses with mercy so that the people of misguidance may be grateful. (The Most Merciful) who has specifically chosen whom He wills for guidance to the qualities that please Him.
* *Because the Surah At-Takwir concluded by stating that He, glorified and exalted is He, does not go beyond His will and that He is the Creator of creation and their planner. There were among the people those who believed that this world is as it is described, having no end: "Wombs give birth, and the earth swallows, and whoever dies has missed out and has turned to dust, and there is no return after missing out." Allah, glorified and exalted is He, opened this Surah with what would serve as a prelude to the purpose of the previous one, that there must be a dismantling of this world and its destruction so that He may hold people accountable and reward each of them, whether they are the doers of good or the doers of evil, according to what they have done. He said: ﴿When the heaven is split open﴾ meaning, on account of its intense firmness, coherence, and organization, ﴿it has split﴾ (p-299) meaning it has been torn apart into many openings. The context of the terror indicates that its doors have many sides, and what was once a sphere containing the air in which people are like fish in water has been removed. Just as when water is uncovered from sea creatures, they perish, likewise will the air be with land creatures. There will be no [life - ] except with a new resurrection and a transition from these causes, so that the reckoning may be with reward and punishment.
