Commentary

Then it was said in the context of beginning anew, to frighten the parents: "By what reason?" That is, because of what "sin?" O ignorant ones, "was killed" means it deserved death in your view, while it [is] not committing any evil because it has not reached the age of obligation. So what do you think of one who is above it and of one who is a wrongdoer? And its questioning is in the form of reproach to its killer. Indeed, the Arabs used to bury their daughters alive out of fear of poverty or the shame associated with them. They would say: 'We return her to Allah; He is more deserving of her.' They do not accept daughters for themselves but accept them for their Creator. Among them were those who would honor themselves by refraining from that and would ransom the buried girls and raise them. And there is no evidence in the verse regarding the punishment of the children of the disbelievers, nor their exemption from it. For the disbeliever who deserves eternal punishment may be secure, so it is not permissible to kill him. And the children have not committed anything that would deserve death. From the questioning of the buried girl, it is understood that oppression is forbidden for everyone, and one should restrain their hand and tongue from every person.
