Commentary
And when the matter was made clear, the hearts were hotter than embers. He mentioned what is the greatest intended purpose, which is the question in a way that encompasses understanding. He said: ﴿And when the buried girl is asked﴾, meaning what was buried of the children alive after birth, or what caused their killing before birth by medicine or the like. It was named 'maw'udah' because of the dirt that is placed upon it, which weighs it down and kills it. 'Awda' is the inverted form of 'ada', meaning to weigh down. And throwing it into the well that has been dug for it is akin to the falling of stars and their descent. And when this was the least severe form of killing in their view, and they thought it was something of no consequence, he clarified that it is something to be taken seriously and that there must be a resurrection for it and that it must be placed where it can comprehend and respond, even if the blowing of the spirit into it is in a short time. He said: ﴿It will be asked﴾, meaning its question will occur regarding what is appropriate for it to be asked about.
