Commentary
And when he mentioned the signs of inanimate objects, he followed it with the signs of beneficial animals, which are the most precious of the wealth of the Arabs and the most abundant of it, indicating the greatness of the horror. He said: "And when the she-camels are abandoned," meaning the female camels that have completed ten months of pregnancy, the plural of 'عُشَراءَ' is like 'نُفَساءَ.' They are the most beloved of the wealth of the Arabs to them and the most precious in their sight because they combine meat, back, milk, and hair. It has been narrated that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, passed by his companions with a herd of she-camels that were plentiful. He turned away from them and lowered his gaze. It was said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! This is the most precious of our wealth, why do you not look at them?' He said: 'Indeed, Allah has forbidden me from that.' Then he recited: "And do not extend your eyes to what We have given enjoyment to them" [Ta-Ha: 131]. This name remains until she gives birth to complete the year. "Abandoned" means left neglected as if it has no owner, even though it is the most precious of their wealth. When it reaches that point, they treat it well and cherish it, and their attention to it intensifies. They say: 'Its goodness has come from offspring and milk,' because the matter, due to everyone being preoccupied with themselves, is more terrifying than anyone turning to anything, even if it is precious.
