Commentary
And when that was the case, perhaps the one who is obstinate in creating actions would be burdened by it. He said, negating their independence and affirming acquisition: "And you do not will except that Allah wills." That is, O creatures, the uprightness is only by the will of Allah, the Most High, who has no authority over His will except Him. If He does not will it, you cannot have any will. So call upon Him, making the religion sincerely for Him, that He may will for you what pleases Him and guide you to it. And from Wahb ibn Munabbih, it is said: The books that Allah revealed to the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, are ninety-six books. I have read from them eighty books and found in them: Whoever attributes to himself something of will has disbelieved - this is the end.
And whoever reflects on this verse with the slightest reflection knows that the words of the Mu'tazilah after it regarding destiny are evidence that if a person has a desire that nothing can turn away, "And whoever Allah misguides, for him there is no guide."
And when He described Himself, glorified and exalted is He, as nothing escapes His command, He followed that description with what is like the reason for that by saying: "Lord of the worlds," that is, the Creator for them, the Owner, the Benefactor to them, and the Nurturer of them, and He knows them better than they know themselves. For this reason, they can only do what He has decreed for them, and it is obligatory upon each of them to obey Him and to turn entirely to Him, glorified and exalted is He, and to thank Him in hopes of increase. For this lordship, His actions regarding the sun and what follows it, as mentioned at the beginning of the surah, are valid for establishing the Hour for the purpose of accounting the creatures and ensuring justice among them by severing all ties, just as every Lord does with those He nurtures. So how about the Most Just of judges and the Most Merciful of the merciful! Indeed, their two ends have met on the most honorable of faces and the most splendid, and the beginning of the rupture has been arranged with what has its wondrous secrets. So the folding is like the splitting, and the bursting is like the falling and the spreading, and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows best what is correct.
