Commentary
'And when the stars' refers to all of them, both small and large. 'Are extinguished' means they have fallen and collapsed, scattered until it is as if they have done so by themselves without the action of a doer, in the utmost haste, or they have darkened, as in 'I disturbed the water and it became cloudy.' Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'Allah will roll up the sun, the moon, and the stars on the Day of Resurrection in the sea, then He will send a wind from the west that will ignite them, and they will become fire.' Al-Kalbi and Ata said: 'On that day, the sky will rain stars, and there will not remain a star except that it will fall.'
