Commentary
And when he mentioned its absence, it was understood from him its place, which is the daytime. He mentioned the place of its appearance and made the appearance understood, and he said: "And the night," meaning that which is the place of the appearance of the stars and the disappearance of their hiding and the going away of their concealment. "When it darkens," meaning when its darkness approaches, and its blackness and gloom gather. The stars appeared like scattered flowers in the vastness of that darkness. For indeed, in it is a deficiency by the darkness and other than that from the rulings. And it was said: its meaning is it turned away, and it was said: it became darker, and it was said: it became half, and it was said: it ended. And "darkens" in its meaning is that which does not become impossible by reflection. And the verse is from the interweaving: the mention of the hiding of the stars and their concealment first makes understood their appearance second, and the mention of the night second makes understood the omission of the daytime first.
