Commentary

And when he mentioned the abode of the distant enemies as a warning, he followed it with the abode of the happy close ones as an encouragement. He said: ﴿And when the Paradise﴾, meaning the garden with intertwined trees and delightful meadows, ﴿is brought near﴾, meaning it has come close to the believers and has enjoyed the coolness of living and the goodness of the dwelling. Its levels have been raised and prepared, its water basins and factories have been filled, its dishes have been adorned, its ground has been cleaned, and it has been purified from everything that is disgraceful. Its meadows have become beautiful with everything that adorns them. From the words of the people of language, 'zulfa' - with a vowel: closeness, degree, and filled basins, and [zulfah-]: the filled manufactured item, the dish, and the overturned ground, and 'zilf' - with a kasra. The meadow, and the meaning of this is the opposite of the boiling of the seas. Thus, the verse contains a connection: mentioning the pricing first indicates its opposite in Paradise secondly, and mentioning the nearness secondly indicates something similar first.
