Commentary
And when this matter was tremendous, and the wicked, due to what is upon their hearts of rust and their hardness, have little fear of death and no thought of what tomorrow will bring, due to what has dominated them of the two desires: the animalistic and the base, unlike the pious in all of that, he began the narration with an increase in the terror, saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning the distant, the hated ﴿are﴾ specifically them alone ﴿the disbelievers﴾ meaning those who have concealed the signs of faith ﴿the wicked﴾ meaning those who have exited the bounds of the law in an outrageous manner until they became entrenched in that disbelief and wickedness, and they are mostly the affluent who are led by their wealth to arrogance, excess, and indulgence. So, for their combination of disbelief and wickedness, they have been combined with dust and filth, just as it is for the blacks of the regions when dust and dirt rise upon their faces. Indeed, the last of it has returned upon the first of it regarding those who deserve to be turned away from and those who deserve to be approached - and Allah is the Guide.
