Commentary
And when the people of happiness were mentioned, those who are inclined towards good and afflicted in themselves by that which expiates their sins and elevates their ranks, their opposites were mentioned. So He, the Exalted, said: ﴿And faces﴾ and He emphasized by repeating the circumstance to remove the doubt, saying: ﴿On that Day﴾ [meaning -] when He finds what was mentioned ﴿upon it﴾ meaning close to it with dominance and elevation. ﴿Dust﴾ means a state of being covered, and it is as if it becomes as though dust has risen upon it, and it is frowning, cautious, and terrified, and that is from what befalls it of hardships and the abundance of crowding along with the terror of the heart, and the remembrance of what it is destined to face of severe calamities.
