Commentary
And when he recognized, in the context of the absence, what was intended by the veneration, and the length of avoidance necessitated withdrawal, he turned to him, blessings and peace be upon him, and said: "And what makes you know?" That is, what thing makes you aware of his condition, even if you strive in that, for the realities of the hearts are known only to Allah, glorified and exalted is He. "Perhaps he" that is, the blind man, "will purify himself," that is, he may be in a state where his purification is hoped for, and the growth of his righteous conditions is expected by what he hears from you, even if it is in the slightest ways, by which the merging of the letter of causation is indicated.
