Commentary
And when the grain is food, He began with it because it is the foundation of sustenance. He then mentioned what is fruit and food, saying: ﴿and grapes﴾. It is fruit in its grape form and food by making it into raisins, syrup, and vinegar. And since this is in the statement of the wonders of creation to indicate the power over everything, it indicates the power over resurrection. He mentioned what, if taken from its origin before reaching maturity, spoils. If left, it becomes strong and suitable for storage. He followed it with what, if left on its origin, spoils. If taken and treated, it becomes suitable for storage. He followed it with what is not suitable for storage in any way, saying: ﴿and herbage﴾. It is the fresh produce from vegetables and others. It surpasses the previous two in that it contains what is a beneficial medicine and a deadly poison. It is cut repeatedly, and it regenerates. It is named from its source, as it is cut by harvesting or uprooting.
