Commentary

'Then' means after the end of the period. 'The path' means the most complete in generality, breadth, and clarity, and nothing else. It is what brings him out from the womb of his mother and his way to Paradise or Hell. 'He makes it easy for him' means He has made his matter easy for him in his emergence by opening the mouth of the womb and inspiring him to turn over. He has also made the path of good and evil easy for him, and He has given him a mind that leads him to what He has made easy for him of either. In this, there is an indication that this world is a place of passage, and the destination is other than it, which is the Hereafter that this world points to. Therefore, He follows it by saying that death is one of the blessings, for if a person were to remain alive with what he reaches of weakness and fear, it would be in the utmost ugliness and a source of joy for his enemies and distress for his allies, while death is the cause of eternal life.
