Commentary

And when the description with these high attributes was for the writers whose hands are a container for the pages, which are a container for the reminder, to alert to the greatness of what is written, the majesty of its measure, and the greatness of its effects, and the manifestation of that for whoever reflects upon it and contemplates it with true contemplation and has a keen gaze, he follows it with the saying - lamenting for those who do not fully turn towards it, calling upon the greatest calamities of this world, which is killing, in the form of news, because it is more eloquent: ﴿Killed is the human﴾, meaning this type of human being, with his own soul, who forgets his Lord, the one who is arrogant towards others, admiring the qualities that his Creator has fashioned for him. His killing is achieved by his curse and expulsion, and he is rid of it with the easiest and simplest effort of anyone who can be valid for that, for it is the quickest thing to corruption because it is built upon deficiencies, except for whom Allah protects. ﴿How ungrateful he is﴾, meaning how severe is his covering of the truth and his denial of it and his obstinacy in it, for denying the resurrection and associating others with his Lord and other matters of his. So, it is a curse upon him with the most hideous curse and astonishment at his excess in concealing the merits of the Quran, which are not hidden from anyone, and its signs of the resurrection, and everything that no one can cover in the face of anything from it. And this curse, despite its specificity, indicates a great wrath and a profound blame, and although it is in a specific case, the lesson is in its generality for everyone who has denied the blessing of Allah. It has been narrated that it was revealed concerning 'Utbah ibn Abi Lahab, who was angry with his father, then he embraced Islam, and then his father reconciled with him and gave him money and equipped him to go to Sham. He sent to the Prophet ﷺ that he was a disbeliever in the Lord of the star when it descends, and he spoke obscenely beyond this. So, the Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Allah, send upon him a dog from Your dogs.' When he reached a place on the road where there was a lion, he remembered the curse and made for those with him a thousand dinars if he reached [alive]. They placed it in the middle of the company, the luggage, and the camels. The lion approached the luggage and leaped, and he was above it, and he tore him apart. His father was lamenting and weeping over him and said: 'Muhammad did not say anything except that it was true.' And despite that, what he knew from that did not benefit him. So, glorified is He in whose hand are the hearts; He leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills, and all of that from His guidance and misguidance is a witness that to Him belongs the praise.
