Commentary
﴿And He brought their hearts together﴾ after the utmost hatred. So the distant became close, the hated became beloved, and the enemy became a friend. They were of one heart. Then He began to inform them of what indicated the impossibility of their unity if it were not for Him. He said: ﴿If you had spent﴾ meaning: and you are the most capable of creation for what you do ﴿what is in the earth all together﴾ meaning: in the desire for that ﴿you would not have brought their hearts together﴾. Then He affirmed that by saying: ﴿But Allah﴾ meaning: and He is the One who has all the attributes of perfection ﴿brought them together﴾. [Then] He explained [the effectiveness] of His action and command in it by saying: ﴿Indeed, He is Exalted in Might, Wise﴾ meaning: because if it were not for His might that overcomes everything and nothing overcomes it, and His wisdom by which He perfects what He intends, such that it is not possible for anyone to change anything of it, when they were brought together after each one of them from their two groups was more desirable to the other than the sweetness of life and the purity of living due to the grudges that continue to boil and stir the chests until they overflow with the killing of loved ones from parents and children, and the oppression by various harms along with the neighboring that necessitates the continuity of envy and the stirring of resentments. Likewise, He did this, glorified and exalted is He, with all the Arabs after there was among them widespread killing along with their zeal and pride that drive them to seek revenge.
And the One who has supported you with these kindnesses is a living One who does not die, remaining as He was in power and strength. He is the guarantor of your protection from those who wish to deceive you. So if He commands you with a command, then obey it without thinking of its consequences, for He has made it clear with His might and perfected it with His wisdom, and you will know.
