And when the guarantee of victory and the oath in spending necessitate the continuation of confrontation and distance from peace, he followed his saying with a command for moderation: ﴿And if they incline﴾ meaning: they lean and approach with vigor and a determined pursuit ﴿to peace﴾ meaning: reconciliation. The expression with the preposition 'lam' instead of 'ila' does not lack an indication of the eagerness for that, so that the truth of the inclination may be realized. ﴿Then incline﴾, and since peace is masculine, it is permissible to feminize it. He said: ﴿to her﴾ meaning: to the reconciliation, or it may be that its feminization is by the feminization of its opposite, war. It is as if the feminization was chosen to indicate that it should be limited to the least possible duration according to necessity. This is if the reconciliation is for the Muslims in that it is due to their weakness. The maximum permissible duration is ten years, following the example of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and no increase is allowed. (p-317) And when that was a reason to say: that it has been known from them the deceit of which they are aware that they are inclined to what they do not believe in, thus their peace is a danger without benefit, he hinted at what contradicts that by saying: ﴿And put your trust in Allah﴾ meaning: the One who has the keys of greatness in what you are entrusted with from their deceit, for He will suffice you in your matter and make it a cause for their destruction, as occurred in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, for their treachery therein was the cause of victory. The preposition of elevation in this and similar cases indicates that He will act with the one who puts his trust in Him as the bearer of what has been entrusted to him, capable of bearing it. Then he justified the command to trust, which means the absence of fear from the consequences of their matter in that by saying: ﴿Indeed, He﴾ meaning: alone ﴿is the All-Hearing﴾ meaning: the One whose hearing is profound, for He hears all that they have concluded in that and other matters secretly as He hears it publicly. ﴿The All-Knowing﴾ meaning: the One whose knowledge is profound alone, for He knows all that they have concealed just as He knows what they have declared.
