And when the abandonment of the covenant is a cause for fear of the increase of the enemy and awakening it, and the infliction is more deserving of fear, He, glorified and exalted is He, followed that with what occurs to him and comforts about the loss of those who fled from the disbelievers in the Battle of Badr, so they were not killed nor captured. He said: ﴿And let not those who disbelieve think﴾ with the 'ya' as a ghayb on the reading of Ibn 'Amir, Hamzah, and Hafs, meaning: one of your followers [at a time] from the times. And the way of reading of the others with the address is that the command of the leader and his prohibition have a greater impact on the souls of the followers and invite them to listen. ﴿Those who disbelieved﴾ means: all of those who abandoned and those who did not abandon. ﴿They have preceded﴾ means: they have attained the precedence, which is victory at some time, for they did not miss anything of our commands; then He explained that by saying: ﴿Indeed, they will not cause failure﴾ meaning: [they] will not miss anything that increases the authority over them, meaning: do not let their superiority and multitude and the occurrence of many matters according to their desires deceive you, for all of that is by Our planning, and nothing escapes from Our will, and it is inevitable that We will destroy them; for they are in Our grasp, they have not escaped from it and will not escape, let alone that they will miss it, so be patient.
