Commentary

And when He reminded them, glorified and exalted is He, of what necessitated their victory, commanding them to remain steadfast in it, He mentioned to them the state of their enemies which necessitated their defeat, prohibiting it, alluding to the state of contention over the spoils of war and that it is the state of one who desires this world. It is near - if it continues - to lead to a state like that of those whose focus is this world. So He said: "And do not be like those" meaning: O assembly of the believers, "who went out from their homes" meaning: each one from his home, and they are the people of Makkah. And anyone who acts like them is like them. Therefore, He expressed it with the description to encompass "arrogance" meaning: tyranny and pride over the truth. The root of 'batar' - in whatever arrangement it occurs - revolves around the softness that is receptive to action until it is tied. For if it were not for weakness, the tied would not be secured. And from it is the 'batar' of the wound - which is its tearing - and the veterinarian. Sometimes that softness occurs from astonishment. And from it is 'abtar'tu hilmahu meaning: I astonished him from it, and his blood went in 'batar' meaning: in vain due to weakness from it, from the bewilderment in the matter that leads to it. And sometimes it occurs from exceeding the limit in rigidity. And from it is 'batar' of the blessing - if he does not thank it, he exceeds the limit in merriment. For the doer of that is enabled by the Wise from his traps, and he takes him while he returns to the inability to bear the strength of gratitude. So the doer of that is weak, even if the opposite appears from him, as Umar may Allah be pleased with him said: Justice, even if it appears soft, prevents me from oppression, and tyranny, even if it appears severe - or as he said may Allah be pleased with him. And closer to that is that the root is revolving around the mixture that transfers from one state to another.

And when He mentioned the one who incited them to go out from themselves, He mentioned what was necessitated for them from other than it. He said: "To show off to the people" meaning: they went out to show the people their going out and what they are affected by to show them what they say about it. For when it was said to them: Allah has saved your caravan, so return, they were arrogant about the blessing following Abu Jahl when he said: By Allah, we will not return until we reach Badr, so we drink the wines and slaughter the camels, and the female musicians play for us, so the Arabs hear of us and will always fear us! So they were given in place of wine cups of red deaths, and the mourners of time lamented over them instead of the music and the female musicians.

And when he mentioned the self of exiting and what is in it of corruption, and he mentioned its foul fruit that arises from those two morals, and he expressed them by name as an indication of steadfastness, as is the case with morals, and about the fruit with the present tense, indicating that they are still renewing it. He said: ﴿And they hinder﴾ meaning: they create hindrance, which is prevention for themselves and others ﴿from the path of Allah﴾ meaning: the Most Great King in that regard, and they are determined to renew that at all times. So when these are their intentions, their weaving is flimsy and their building is weak, for it is from the work of Satan. And every action that is not for Allah, when it is confronted by what is for Allah, diminishes. By that, glorified and exalted is He, He established His tradition, and you will not find any alteration in His tradition. For the workers are the servants of Allah ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning: they did that while the One who encompasses everything, whom they opposed, is ﴿with what﴾ or that could be connected to its estimation: So Allah, by His majesty and greatness, nullified their deeds, and He is encompassing of all that ﴿they do﴾. So they are in His grasp. Thus, He brought them - when they went out to oppose Him - to Badr, and He slaughtered their necks in place of the camels and gave them, in place of wine, cups of death. And He called out to them, in place of the singers, the cries of the mourners. And perhaps He presented the neighbor as an indication that due to His complete encompassing of their deeds, it is as if He has no regard for anything else, so there is nothing to distract Him from it.
