Commentary

And when this was established and completed on this path of the most sound rulings and the most upright methodology, it became a reason for the meaning of His saying: "O you who have believed" in the two verses. They were its result; for when it is known that the entire matter is for Him and there is no effect of fewness or abundance, it bears fruit for one who is in the lowest degrees of faith, let alone others, with little concern for the oppressors even if their power exceeds the limit, and they increase in number. The two verses remind them of their state which necessitated their victory so that they must adhere to it in every encounter and not dispute as they disputed over the spoils. "When you meet" means: when you fight, for meeting is a term commonly used for fighting. "A group" means: a faction deserving of fighting, as their description by faith suffices for that. "So be steadfast" means: in meeting them by fighting them as you were steadfast at Badr, and do not let yourselves think of fleeing. "And remember Allah" means: He to whom belongs all perfection, for everything that is sought is found with Him. "Much" means: as you did there; for that is a sign of sincerity in relying solely on Him, and that is a cause for victory without a doubt, as in the sacred hadith: "Indeed, My servant, all My servants, is for the one who remembers Me at the meeting of his kind.

And when He commanded this, He explained it with a tool of hope, to indicate that He, glorified and exalted is He, is not obligated to anything, and it is for faith. He said: "That you may succeed" means: so that you may have hope for success, which is attaining what is desired from victory and reward, just as you were at that time.
