Commentary
He, glorified is He, completed the depiction of their state by His saying, clarifying what He indicated by the subtlety of His contemplation: "When" meaning: remember when you wanted to know that at the time "Allah shows them to you" meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection, for He does what He wills "in your sleep for a little" confirming what He previously informed about, that the confrontation - apart from what arose from it - was nothing but from Him, and that they were like a tool that has no choice. This is because the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, saw them in his sleep for a little, so he informed his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, of that, and their hearts were reassured, and that encouraged them; and he specified what would occur from corruption had it not been for that, and he said: "And if He had shown you" meaning: in your sleep or otherwise "many."
And when the news was after the incident contrary to what occurred in it, which necessitates human nature to pause in it, He emphasized His saying: "You would have failed" meaning: you would have been cowardly "and you would have disputed" meaning: you would have differed, and each one would have taken a stance contrary to the stance of his companion "in the matter" meaning: so you would have weakened, and that would have increased you in weakness and aversion to meeting them. "But Allah" meaning: the One who encompasses everything with power and knowledge "saved" meaning: but He did not show them like that, so safety was achieved from what would result from it of retreating. Then He clarified the reason for arranging that and informing him of this obligatory matter by His saying: "Indeed, He is All-Knowing" meaning: of profound knowledge "of what is in the breasts" meaning: their inner thoughts of boldness and cowardice and others before they arise in the hearts.
