Commentary
And when they confirmed their faith with the actions of the hearts, limbs, and wealth, they fulfilled all branches of the religion. Allah, glorified is He, exalted their status with His saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning: the high aspirations ﴿They are﴾ meaning: specifically ﴿the believers﴾ and He emphasized the meaning of the sentence with His saying: ﴿Truly﴾.
And when their five mentioned attributes, which include morals and actions, have effects in purifying the hearts and illuminating them with divine knowledge, and the stronger the influence, the higher the effects, since they are degrees, their reward is likewise. For this reason, Allah, exalted is He, said in response to one who seemed to ask: So what is their reward for that? ﴿For them are degrees﴾. And when He multiplied it by the plural of safety, as indicated by the context of gratitude, He magnified it with His saying: ﴿With their Lord﴾ meaning: by their submission to His command.
And when Allah's greatness is immense, and man is weak and insignificant in reaching what he must from that, and with the slightest of his actions, he is provoked by admiration, Allah, glorified is He, indicated that he has no choice but forgiveness, even if he exerted beyond his ability, and said: ﴿And forgiveness﴾ meaning: for their sins if they turn away from contention over the spoils and others,
﴿And a noble provision﴾ meaning: there is no constriction in it nor any distress in any way from contention or otherwise. It will suffice them from these spoils and fill their hands with wealth from the spoils of Persia, Rome, and others. This is in this world, and as for the Hereafter, it is what description cannot encompass; Abu Hayyan said: When three heart-related attributes preceded, which are awe, increase of faith, and reliance, and bodily and financial, three things were arranged upon them. The heart-related actions were met with degrees, the bodily with forgiveness, and the financial with noble provision. This type of correspondence is from the wondrous knowledge of the wondrous.
And when faith, according to Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, is belief, acknowledgment, and action, it is permissible to say: A believer, if Allah wills; because the fulfillment of actions is doubtful, even if belief and acknowledgment are certain. And according to Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, faith is only belief and acknowledgment, so he did not permit the exception. Thus, the disagreement is verbal. This is if the exception is for doubt, and if it is for other than that, it is to humble oneself from boasting, and for the testimony of Paradise, which is for the believer, and for the judgment on the state of death, on the condition that this word does not contradict certainty. It is merely for the sake of blessing, like His saying, exalted is He: ﴿You will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety﴾ [Al-Fath: 27]. This was mentioned by Imam Fakhr al-Din.
