Commentary
And when the cause of betrayal is often the love of wealth or children, and the cause of the slander that led to the revelation of this surah - as has been explained at the beginning of it - is the wealth from the spoils of war, and one of the greatest betrayals regarding the spoils is embezzlement. The driving force behind embezzlement is the trial of the love of accumulating wealth, either for enjoyment or to spend it on a beloved, and the child is the most cherished beloved. It is fitting for this saying of His: "And know that"; it is a word by which the listener is alerted that what follows is very important: "Indeed, your wealth"; whether little or much, it is insignificant or valuable; "and your children" likewise; "is a trial"; meaning: its cause, Allah acts with it like the one who tests to reveal to the servants who is deceived by the fleeting worldly life from those whose souls rise above that. So let this not lead you to oppose the command of Allah, lest you perish. "And indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses all perfection; "has a great reward"; both in this world and the Hereafter for whoever adheres to His limits, thus preserving his wealth and causing his children to thrive and blessing him in them along with what He reserves for him in the abode of happiness. And He has a painful punishment for whoever neglects it. So turn to Him with all your determination, and you will be happy. The context here is further beautified by the reason for the revelation of what precedes it, which is the story of Abu Lubabah, may Allah be pleased with him, who was burdened by his wealth and children. His story occurred in Qurayzah in the year five and the Battle of Badr in the second year.
