Commentary
And when the reason for what He has permitted to the disbelievers - from their turning away from responding to them in what they intended from their supplication and from abandoning them in this incident and the obligation of similar things for them forever - is their disobedience to the Messenger and their turning away from accepting what they hear from him of the spirit; He warned the believers against a similar state by continuing in dispute over the spoils or otherwise, and He said: "O you who have believed" meaning: you who claim that; "obey Allah" meaning: He to whom belongs all might and greatness; "and His Messenger" confirming your claim of faith.
And when the obedience to the Messenger is the obedience to Allah because he only calls to what He calls to, and his character is the Qur'an, He unified the pronoun and said: "And do not turn away from him" meaning: from the Messenger in any state of affairs, in a matter of the commands of jihad and others, from the spoils and otherwise, whether it is light or heavy, easy or difficult; "and you" meaning: while you "hear" meaning: you have hearing for what he says, or while you believe him; because committing any of that would contradict the claim of faith and would apply to the conditions of the disbelievers, and to that there is an indication in His saying:
