Commentary
'Indeed, the believers' means: those who are firmly established in the description of faith. 'Those who' means: they establish the evidence for the claim of faith by affirming their actions to their words. So they are 'when Allah is mentioned' means: the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection from majesty and beauty, merely by mentioning Him, as in His saying: 'The spoils belong to Allah' [Al-Anfal: 1]. 'Their hearts tremble' means: they fear with a great fear that penetrates their very bones and circulates in all their meanings and bodies. 'Their hearts' means: by merely mentioning Him, out of reverence for Him. 'And when His verses are recited to them' means: they are read in a manner of connection and continuity from any reciter. 'His verses upon them' means: as it comes in establishing the evidence for that ruling which has been mentioned in it. 'It increases them in faith' means: by their belief in it and by what they have received of the light of the heart and the tranquility of certainty because of it. For indeed, it is the indicator to Allah by what it clarifies of His great actions and the attributes of His majesty and beauty. The abundance of evidence is stronger for the indicated meaning, and the perfection of Allah's power is known only through the effects of His wisdom in His creations. This is with a heat that has no shore. And since the ranks have no end, the ranks of manifestation and knowledge have no end. Thus, the increase in the individuals of affirmation 'and upon' means: while they are upon 'their Lord' means: the One who constantly bestows goodness upon them alone. 'They place their trust' means: they renew their reliance on Him in all their affairs, no matter what the devil whispers to them about poverty or otherwise, so that He may suffice them from where they do not expect. For indeed, His treasures are vast, and His hand is generous both night and day. Just as when they relied upon Him in battle, He granted them victory, even though they were in extreme fear of defeat. Their condition was worthy of that due to their anxiety, fear, killing, and weakness.
