Commentary
And when this included the infliction of humiliation upon the disbelievers by this event, and the promise of obligating them to humiliation in what is to come, this was a detail for turning to their threat in the form of their being mocked and the magnification of the matter of the believers. So He said: ﴿If you seek victory﴾ meaning: you ask for victory, O disbelievers, after this day just as you sought victory in this event when you took hold of the curtains of the Kaaba at the time of your departure with your saying: 'O Allah, support the most guided of the two parties, and the most honorable of the two armies, and the highest of the two groups, and the best of the two religions,' and at the time of the encounter of the two gatherings; with the saying of Abu Jahl: 'O Allah, cut us off from the womb and bring us what we do not know, so grant us victory in the morning.' Victory has come to you just as it came to you on this day. ﴿Indeed, victory has come to you﴾ meaning: on this day with the victory of the believers. ﴿The victory﴾ meaning: that which you sought victory for because they are the most guided of the two groups and the most honorable of the two factions. ﴿And if you cease﴾ meaning: after this from such sayings and actions that include doubt or obstinacy, ﴿it is better for you﴾ and you have seen the signs of that. ﴿And if you return﴾ meaning: to the confrontation because you have not ceased, ﴿we will return﴾ meaning: to your defeat. ﴿And your group﴾ meaning: your assembly to which you refer for pride in it ﴿will not avail you﴾ meaning: ever ﴿anything﴾ meaning: of benefit. ﴿Even if it is numerous﴾ because Allah is against the disbelievers. ﴿And indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the Greatest King ﴿is with the believers﴾ meaning: those firmly established in faith. And perhaps it refers to the future in the condition and the past in the recompense. This indicates that you sought victory in Badr and what you saw of victory came to you. So if it pleased you, adhere to it in the future, for I will not come to you ever as long as you remain in your state except with what I brought you on that day. And victory may be understood as meaning support, and it may mean judgment.
