Commentary
And when he established their humiliation in this world and the Hereafter by what he made clear to them in their hearts, it was appropriate that this should be followed by a prohibition for those who claimed faith from fleeing from them and a warning for those who turned back from them after this clarification while they claim faith. He said: "O you who have believed," meaning: by what has come to them from their Lord. "When you meet those who disbelieve," meaning: by the signs of their Lord, then compete with them. He expressed the state of meeting them with the source as an exaggeration in comparison, saying: "in a rush," meaning: while they are rushing, fighting, and they are so numerous that their movement cannot be perceived - even if it is swift - except like that of a rush. "So do not turn your backs to them," meaning: fleeing from them even if you are fewer than them.
