Commentary
Then he explained their being given power over them by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great power. And he informed about it by saying: ﴿Because they﴾ meaning: those who are now engaged in disbelief, even if they are among those whose faith will be judged later. ﴿Opposed Allah﴾ meaning: the Sovereign, the Most High, whose vengeance cannot be endured. ﴿And His Messenger﴾ meaning: they sought to be in opposition to the commands and prohibitions in a way that is different from that of the party of guidance, in a plot from them and deceit. And they opposed Him by openly brandishing the sword. Then he clarified what is for the doer of that, saying, adding to his statement: So whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger, do to him that; for I will do to him what I did to these. And he showed the assimilation in the present tense because the story for the Arabs and their matter in their enmity was severe and openly declared after the migration. And he assimilated in the past tense because what occurred before it was between secrecy with cunning and open declaration with overpowering. And he expressed in the present tense as a call to repentance by tying the warning to continuity. And he assimilated in the gathering in both places because the story for the Jews and their matter was weak and secretive in cunning: ﴿And whoever opposes Allah﴾ meaning: He to whom belongs all command, so there is no command for anyone with Him, and he opposes Him secretly or openly ﴿And His Messenger﴾ by being in a way that is different from the way they both are pleased with. ﴿Then indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: He who possesses all attributes of perfection ﴿is severe in punishment﴾ meaning: He has this attribute, so let the opposer expect His punishment. The verse is from the intertwining: mentioning the assimilated action first is evidence of the omission of the apparent second, and the apparent second is evidence of the omission of the assimilated first.
And when he concluded the verse by stating the reason for the humiliation of those who disbelieved and by what he has of the great description, he followed it with what he says to them to clarify the situation at that time by saying, turning to them for more reproach and admonition.
