Commentary

And when he mentioned the first blast, he immediately followed it with the second as an indication of its proximity, a proximity that is spiritual to confirm the occurrence. This is all within the judgment of one day, so the coming of the state is correct even if its time is far from that of its companion. He said: ﴿The second will follow it﴾, meaning the subsequent blast that all the dead will rise with, and the bones will gather. The earth and the heavens will tremble from its terror, the mountains will be crushed, and the earthquake will be great. The movement will occur after the return to the great heap, and similar matters of great and prolonged severity. Hamzah al-Karmani said: Al-Suddi narrated from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the people die in the first blast, water will rain down upon them from beneath the Throne, called the water of life, and they will grow from it as plants grow from water. Until when their bodies are complete, the spirit will be blown into them, then they will be given a sleep. While they are in their graves, the trumpet will be blown a second time, and they will sit up while they find the taste of sleep in their heads and eyes.
